Turn over almost any children's garment sold in Canada or the United States and you will find polyester on the label — often blended with cotton, often on its own. It is inexpensive, it holds colour, it resists wrinkles, and it survives industrial laundering.

None of that makes it wrong. But cotton and polyester are not variations on a theme. One is a plant fibre and the other is a plastic, and almost every practical difference — heat, odour, static, how the fabric behaves against skin — follows from that single fact. This guide sets out what the difference actually means, where it matters for a child, and where polyester is genuinely the better choice.

They are fundamentally different materials

Cotton is a plant fibre. Under magnification it is a hollow, twisted ribbon — which is exactly why it absorbs moisture and lets air move through it. The structure is doing the work.

Polyester is a plastic. Specifically polyethylene terephthalate, the same polymer family as a beverage bottle, melted and extruded into continuous filaments. It is solid, smooth and non-absorbent by design.

Nearly every difference below follows from that. Cotton is hydrophilic — it draws water in. Polyester is hydrophobic and oleophilic — it repels water and attracts oil. Hold those two words and the rest of this guide is predictable.

Heat and moisture: the difference a child actually feels

Cotton absorbs moisture into the fibre and releases it into the air. Polyester manages sweat by wicking — moving it along the filament surface to evaporate. That works well during sustained exercise. It works much less well when a child is sitting still in a warm room, which is most of their day.

This matters more for children than for adults. Children carry more skin surface relative to body mass and their thermoregulation is still developing, so they gain and lose heat faster than we do. A garment that traps heat has a bigger effect on a four-year-old than the same garment would on you.

Why Canadian winters make it worse, not better

The intuition is that synthetic layers are a summer problem. In Canada the harder season is winter, and the harder place is indoors.

Forced-air heating produces warm air at very low humidity. A child moves between a heated house, a car, and a heated classroom — lightly sweating the whole time, with the moisture held against the skin rather than moving away — and then steps out into dry cold. The cycle of damp-warm and dry-cold is harder on skin than either state on its own.

What "breathable" actually means

The word gets used loosely, so it is worth being precise. Breathability is two separate properties that often get merged: air permeability — whether air passes through the fabric structure — and moisture vapour transmission — whether water vapour can move from the skin side to the outside.

A tightly woven cotton poplin can be relatively low on the first and still high on the second, because the fibre itself absorbs moisture and passes it along. A loosely knitted polyester can be high on the first and poor on the second, because the filament has nowhere to put the water. This is why a child in a light synthetic top can still feel clammy in a warm room while a heavier cotton shirt feels fine.

For a garment worn against skin for eight or ten hours, the second property is the one that determines comfort.

Odour: a fibre property, not a laundry failure

Body odour on clothing is not really sweat. Sweat is mostly water and salt and rinses out easily. What lingers is sebum — the natural oil skin produces — and the by-products of bacteria feeding on it.

Because polyester is oleophilic, it attracts and holds that oil. Because it is also hydrophobic, the water and detergent you are washing with struggle to reach the oil in the first place. The garment comes out looking clean, feeling clean, and still holding a reservoir of oxidised body oil deep in the fibre. Warm it up — a car seat, a stroller in the sun — and the smell returns.

Cotton does the opposite on both counts, which is why the same wash cycle gets a cotton shirt properly clean and leaves a polyester one faintly sour. We have written about this at length in why baby clothes still smell after washing.

Static: small, and genuinely irritating

Polyester does not conduct moisture, so it accumulates static charge — clinging clothes, crackling, the occasional shock pulling a sweater off. Dry indoor heating makes it considerably worse, which is why it shows up as a winter complaint. Cotton, which holds some ambient moisture, barely does this.

On skin that is already itchy, static cling is one more thing a child cannot articulate and simply reacts to.

Skin contact: being accurate rather than alarming

For most children, most of the time, polyester causes no problem at all. It is worth saying that plainly, because a great deal of writing on this subject overstates the case.

Where it becomes worth attention is sensitive or eczema-prone skin. Two mechanisms are relevant, and they are different from each other. The first is physical: trapped heat and moisture held against skin can aggravate irritation. The second is chemical: the finishing treatments applied to synthetic textiles — dyes, softeners, wrinkle-resistant finishes — sit on a surface that does not breathe.

What published guidance says

Guidance from national eczema and dermatology organisations consistently favours smooth, breathable natural fibres next to the skin for children with atopic dermatitis, and advises avoiding materials that trap heat or create friction. The stated reasoning is the same in each case: reduce the mechanical and thermal triggers, so that treatment can do its work.

Where polyester is genuinely the better choice

An honest comparison has to include the cases where the plastic wins, and there are several:

  • Outerwear and rainwear. You want water resistance and fast drying. Cotton is simply the wrong tool.
  • Snow gear. Canadian winters demand synthetic shells and insulation. Cotton absorbs water and loses its thermal properties when wet — in genuine cold that is a safety issue, not a comfort preference.
  • Sustained sport. During prolonged activity, wicking does what it is designed to do.
  • Structured garments. Some items need a fibre that holds its shape through repeated wear.

The workable rule is a layering rule rather than a fibre rule: natural fibres next to skin, synthetics for the outer layer that faces the weather.

How to read a label properly

1. Read the composition, not the adjective

"Cotton-rich" can mean 60% cotton — which means 40% something else against your child's skin. "Cotton-feel" frequently means no cotton at all. The percentage is the only part of that sentence carrying information.

2. Notice the finishes

Wrinkle-free, stain-resistant and anti-odour treatments are chemical coatings applied to the fabric. On a garment worn against skin all day, it is worth asking whether you need them.

3. Look for certification you can actually check

GOTS governs the whole chain — organic fibre plus processing restrictions: no chlorine bleaching, no formaldehyde finishes, a restricted dye list, and prohibition of azo dyes that release harmful amines. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 takes a different angle: it tests the finished product for a list of harmful substances, regardless of whether the fibre is organic.

Check any brand's certification before you buy

GOTS licences and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certificates both carry numbers you can verify on the issuing body's public database. Look for the number on the label, or ask the seller for a current copy. Note that a certified fabric is not the same as a certified garment. And treat uncertifiable words as decoration — "eco-friendly", "natural" and "hypoallergenic" are unregulated for textiles and assert nothing testable. No number, no verification — for every brand, ours included.

What this looks like in a real wardrobe

None of the above argues for replacing everything at once. The useful order is by contact time: whatever sits against skin all day first, then sleepwear, then outer layers. Certified organic cotton for the first two, and synthetics where they genuinely belong.

Is polyester unsafe for children?
