You washed them. They came out looking clean. Then you picked up the sleeve, held it close, and there it was again — that faint sour, musty, slightly rancid smell that seems to live in the fabric itself.

If this happens with some of your child’s clothes but not others, you are not imagining it, and you are almost certainly not doing anything wrong. The smell is usually a fibre problem, not a laundry problem — which is exactly why washing harder rarely fixes it.

The short answer: oil does not dissolve in water

Fabric science: polyester is oleophilic — it attracts and holds oil — and hydrophobic, so it repels the water you are trying to wash that oil out with. Cotton is the reverse on both counts. That single pair of properties explains almost everything below.

Body odour on clothing is not really sweat. Sweat is mostly water and salt, and it rinses out easily. What lingers is sebum — the natural oil skin produces — along with the by-products of bacteria feeding on it.

The result is a fabric that looks clean, feels clean, and still holds a reservoir of oxidised body oil deep in the fibre. Warm it up — a car seat, a stroller in the sun, a child running around — and the smell comes back.

Why it is worse in North American homes than you would expect

1. High-efficiency washers use less water

HE front-loaders are now standard across North America and they are genuinely better for water and energy use. But less water means less dilution — detergent and dissolved oils have less volume to escape into, and more chance to redeposit on the fabric.

2. Cold-water washing

Washing cold is good practice: gentler on fibres, much cheaper to run. The trade-off is that sebum is a soft solid at room temperature. Cold water does not soften it enough for detergent to lift it out of a synthetic fibre.

3. Hard water

Large parts of Canada and the US sit on hard water — much of the Prairies, southern Ontario, and a broad band of the American Midwest. Calcium and magnesium bind with detergent to form a soap scum that deposits on fabric, traps odour compounds, and builds up wash after wash.

The fabric softener trap

This one is counter-intuitive, so it is worth stating plainly: fabric softener usually makes the smell worse.

Softeners work by coating fibres in a thin waxy or silicone layer. That is what produces the soft hand-feel. But the coating also seals in whatever is already in the fabric, and it reduces absorbency — which matters enormously for anything meant to manage moisture. The same applies to dryer sheets.

What the dryer is doing to the problem

The dryer is where a manageable smell often becomes a permanent one, and almost nobody suspects it.

Heat sets residues. If a garment goes into the dryer still holding oxidised sebum — which is exactly what happens when a cold wash fails to lift it — the heat bakes those compounds further into the fibre. On synthetics this is close to irreversible, because polyester softens slightly at drying temperatures and the residue effectively becomes part of the filament surface.

Two practical consequences follow. First, smell the garment before it goes in the dryer, not after. If it still smells damp-sour when wet, rewashing at that point is far more effective than any treatment after drying. Second, if you have a garment that already smells, air-dry it rather than tumbling while you work on it.

Dryer sheets deserve the same scepticism as softener

Dryer sheets work by transferring a fabric-softening coating onto the garment using heat. It is the same mechanism as liquid softener, delivered differently, and it has the same downside: a film that reduces absorbency and seals residues in. On towels, activewear and anything worn against a child’s skin, that is the opposite of what you want.

The strip wash: a reset, not a routine

For garments that have accumulated build-up over months, an ordinary wash will not clear it. A strip wash will, and it is worth knowing about — with the caveat that it is a periodic reset rather than something to do weekly.

  1. Start with clean, dry garments. Counter-intuitive, but the point is to remove what previous washes left behind, not to clean fresh soil.
  2. Soak in hot water the fabric can safely take — check the care label, and keep elastics and prints in mind.
  3. Agitate occasionally over several hours. The water frequently turns visibly grey, which is the detergent, mineral and body-oil build-up releasing.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with a full plain-water cycle, no detergent at all.

Done once or twice a year on the worst offenders, this genuinely resets a wardrobe. Done routinely it is unnecessary wear on the fibres.

Not every smell is body odour

Worth separating out, because the fixes are different:

  • Sour or rancid when warm — oxidised sebum. The subject of this article. Fibre-driven, and the fixes above apply.
  • Musty or cellar-like — usually the washing machine, or humid storage. Clean the machine, dry thoroughly.
  • Chemical or petroleum-like on new clothes — residual finishing agents from manufacturing. Wash before first wear; it normally clears in one or two cycles.
  • Sharp ammonia note — typically urine residue on younger children’s clothing. Needs a dedicated enzyme detergent rather than heat.

Enzyme detergents, briefly

Most mainstream detergents include enzymes — proteases for protein soils, lipases for fats and oils. Lipase is the relevant one here, and it works best in warm rather than cold water and needs contact time. A longer cycle at a moderate temperature will usually outperform a short hot one, which is the opposite of most people’s instinct.

When it is the machine, not the clothes

If clothes smell musty rather than sour, and it affects everything regardless of fabric, look at the machine instead of the wash. Front-loaders trap water in the door gasket and detergent drawer, and biofilm grows there. Wipe the gasket dry, leave the door ajar between loads, and run a monthly empty hot cycle.

Clothing stored over a Canadian winter in a basement or garage can also pick up mustiness from humidity alone. A wash and a proper dry usually resolves that one.

What the fibre data supports

Published textile data is consistent on the mechanism: cellulosic fibres such as cotton absorb moisture into the fibre structure and release it, while polyester holds almost none and instead retains lipids on and within the filament. Odour retention in synthetics is therefore a materials property rather than a hygiene failure, and it is not fully reversible by ordinary laundering.

What to do with the garments you already have

None of this argues for replacing a wardrobe. A reasonable sequence:

  1. Sort by fibre, not by smell. Read the labels and separate majority-synthetic items from cotton ones. The pattern of which garments hold odour will usually map onto that split precisely.
  2. Stop softener and dryer sheets across the board. Free, immediate, and reversible if you disagree.
  3. Halve your detergent dose and add a rinse. Most households are overdosing, particularly with HE machines.
  4. Strip wash the worst offenders once. Some will recover completely. Those that do not are telling you something about the fibre.
  5. Replace by contact time as things wear out. Base layers and sleepwear first, since those are worn longest against skin. Outerwear can stay synthetic — it should be.

That last point matters and is easy to over-correct. Synthetic fabrics are the right answer for a rain shell or a snowsuit, where water resistance and wet-weather insulation are the job. The odour problem is specific to garments worn in prolonged contact with skin, and that is where a change of fibre is worth the money.

The longer-term fix is the fibre

Every technique above is damage control. If a garment is majority polyester and worn close to the skin, it will keep re-acquiring odour, because the underlying chemistry has not changed.

It is not only about what is on the fabric — it is about what the fibre does over months of real use: it releases oils in a normal wash instead of storing them, it breathes so less sweat sits trapped against skin to begin with, and it does not need softener to stay soft, so there is no coating to seal anything in.

Note that a certified fabric is not the same as a certified garment. And treat uncertifiable words as decoration — “eco-friendly”, “natural” and “hypoallergenic” are unregulated for textiles and assert nothing testable. Why do only some of my child’s clothes smell?
Almost always fibre content. Garments that are majority polyester hold body oils in the fibre; cotton ones release them in a normal wash. Check the composition label on the items that smell and the ones that do not — the pattern is usually obvious immediately.
