The short answer

For everyday children's clothing, organic cotton and cotton–linen blends are the best default. They move moisture into the fibre instead of holding it against skin, they survive repeated hot washes, and when certified they carry restrictions on the dyes and finishes used to make them.

That is not an argument against synthetics. Polyester is genuinely the right answer for a raincoat, a swimsuit or a ski layer, where you want water kept out rather than absorbed. The mistake is wearing it next to skin, all day — which is exactly where most children's polyester ends up.

How to judge a fabric in ten seconds

Three properties decide almost everything about how a garment behaves on a child:

  • Moisture regain — how much water the fibre absorbs into itself. High regain moves sweat away from skin. Low regain leaves it sitting there.
  • What the finishing was allowed to include — the fibre is only half the story. Bleaching, softening and wrinkle-resist treatments are where irritants enter.
  • How it survives washing — children's clothes are washed hot and often. A fabric that pills or thins after ten washes is not cheap, whatever it cost.

Fabric by fabric

Organic cotton — the everyday default

Cotton absorbs roughly 8.5% of its own weight in moisture and releases it slowly, which is why a cotton t-shirt feels dry long after a polyester one feels clammy. The organic part changes the processing rather than the fibre: under the Global Organic Textile Standard, chlorine bleaching and formaldehyde finishes are prohibited and the permitted dye list is restricted.

Cotton–linen blends — the best hot-weather compromise

Linen has the highest moisture regain of the common apparel fibres at about 12%, and a looser weave that moves air. Pure linen creases dramatically and can feel stiff to a child who dislikes texture. Blending it with cotton keeps most of the breathability and removes most of the complaints, which is why blends dominate warm-weather children's wear.

Linen — excellent, with a caveat

In genuinely hot or humid weather nothing outperforms linen. It also softens with every wash rather than wearing out. The caveat is sensory: new linen can feel scratchy, and some children will refuse it outright. Buy it pre-washed if you can.

Conventional cotton — fine fibre, unknown finishing

The fibre behaves identically to organic cotton. What differs is what was allowed downstream: no restriction on chlorine bleaching, formaldehyde-based wrinkle-resist finishes, or the dye list. For most children this is unremarkable. For a child who reacts to new clothes, it is the most likely culprit — and it explains why washing new garments before wear helps.

Bamboo viscose — soft, but not what it sounds like

Marketed as a natural fibre, bamboo viscose is chemically regenerated: the plant is dissolved into a solution and extruded as filament. The result is genuinely soft and drapes beautifully, which is why it dominates sleepwear. But it cannot carry GOTS certification, and “organic bamboo” on a label refers at best to how the plant was grown, not to how the fabric was made.

Polyester — right for the job, wrong next to skin

Polyester's moisture regain is about 0.4%. It does not absorb sweat; it moves it along the surface or traps it. That is an advantage in a shell layer keeping rain out, and a liability in a school shirt worn for seven hours. It is also where the odour problem comes from: body oils bind to the fibre and survive a normal wash, which is why polyester garments smell again minutes after being worn.

Acrylic and fleece — warmth at a cost

Both are polyester-family synthetics chosen for warmth per gram and low price. Both pill, both build static, and both are the heaviest microfibre shedders in the wash. Weight and weave change everything

Two garments can both say “100% cotton” and behave nothing alike. Fabric weight is measured in grams per square metre, and for children's clothing the useful bands are roughly:

  • Under 120 gsm — voile, lawn, gauze. Summer dresses and shirts. Light and airy, but shows wear quickly at knees and elbows.
  • 120–180 gsm — standard jersey and poplin. The everyday band: most t-shirts, blouses and school shirts sit here.
  • 180–250 gsm — heavy jersey, twill, canvas. Trousers, pinafores and anything that meets a playground.

Weave matters just as much. A plain weave breathes more than a tight twill of identical weight; a knit stretches and recovers where a woven does not. If a garment feels stiff and airless despite a natural-fibre label, the weave is usually why.

The rule that survives every trend

Natural fibre next to skin, synthetic on the outside if the weather demands it. A merino or cotton base layer under a polyester shell gives you the weather protection without seven hours of plastic against the chest. It is the same principle adults use for hiking, applied to a five-year-old walking to school.

The two GOTS label grades
“Organic” means at least 95% certified organic fibre. The Global Organic Textile Standard publishes two grades and they are not interchangeable. Products carrying the “Organic” label grade contain a minimum of 95% certified organic fibres. The “Made with Organic” grade means between 70% and 95%. A garment can therefore be honestly labelled under GOTS while nearly a third of it is not organic fibre — which is why the grade matters more than the logo.

How to read a label in a shop

In Canada, fibre content disclosure on textile articles is required under the Textile Labelling Act, so the composition tag is not optional and is the most reliable thing on the garment. Three habits are worth building:

  • Read the composition before the marketing. “Breathable” and “natural feel” are unregulated. “95% polyester” is not.
  • Check what touches skin. A cotton outer with a polyester lining behaves like polyester on the child.
  • Look for a certificate number, not a logo. GOTS licences and OEKO-TEX certificates both carry numbers that resolve on the issuing body's public database. A brand that will not give you one has told you something.

When synthetic is the right answer

Outerwear, swimwear and sports kit are all jobs where absorbency is a flaw. A cotton raincoat is a wet child. For these, choose the synthetic deliberately and manage it: wash cold, wash full loads, and keep the synthetic layer off the skin with a natural base layer underneath.

The same logic applies to sleepwear, with one addition. Snug-fitting sleepwear is often cut close precisely because it carries no flame-retardant treatment — a loose synthetic nightdress and a snug untreated cotton one are different safety propositions, and the fit is part of the design rather than a sizing error.

Making it last

Fabric choice is undone by laundry. Wash at the lowest effective temperature, skip fabric softener (it coats fibres and destroys absorbency — the opposite of why you bought cotton), and dry flat or on low. Natural fibres reward this; synthetics are damaged fastest by heat, which is also when they shed most.

What to buy, by season

The right answer changes with the weather more than with fashion:

  • Summer — linen and cotton–linen, lightest weights, loose cuts. Light colours; a dark cotton shirt in direct sun is warmer than a pale one of the same weight.
  • Spring and autumn — mid-weight cotton jersey, layered. Layers beat one thick garment, because a child who is running is generating far more heat than one who is standing.
  • Winter — cotton or wool base layer, insulating mid-layer, synthetic shell. Indoor heating is the part parents underestimate: a classroom in January is often warmer than the same room in June, and a child in a fleece is overheating by mid-morning.

The five-wash test

Fabric claims are easy to make and hard to check in a shop. The honest test is what a garment looks like after five hot washes, and it separates price from value quickly:

  • Pilling on the inner arm or between the legs means short fibres. It will get worse, not better.
  • Thinning at the shoulders is usually a low-gsm knit sold as lightweight.
  • Collars that no longer sit flat mean the interfacing was fused rather than stitched.
  • A garment that softens and keeps its shape is the one worth rebuying in the next size — and worth handing down.

This is where cost per wear diverges sharply from price. A garment worn twice a week for two years is roughly two hundred wears; one that fails after twenty is not cheap at any price.
